Touristic Information Chia

Some useful information to help you enjoy your Holiday:

Domus de Maria is located in the deep south of the island and its territory contains a myriad of breathtaking natural wonders, ranging from the splendid and renowned beaches of the hamlet of Chia to the mountains abounding with luxuriant woods. In fact, the area is characterised by long beaches with imposing dunes where age-old junipers grow undisturbed and by granite peaks and luxuriant woods where it is not unusual to come across deer or boars. The Mediterranean shrub is also of rare beauty with all its endemic essences of strong perfumes and enchanting colours.
The village sprang up around the XVIII century as a farm founded by the Scolopi Fathers. The territory has been inhabited since the Nuraghic Age, as shown by the “Baccu Idda” Nuraghe and the numerous betilic stones of “Punta Su Sensu”. The town of Bithia was of extreme importance and is found today within the hamlet of Chia. It was of Phoenician-Punic layout and stretched over the headland of the tower where even today, the remains of the outer wall and the dwellings are still visible.

A necropolis has been made out in the lower part of the inhabited area where a temple dedicated to the god Bes was erected. The statue is in perfect condition and is preserved in Cagliari’s Archaeological Musem. The "tophet”, a cremation cemetery for still-born children or anyone dying young, was located on a little island in front of the coast. A stop must be made in this area, if only to visit the vast snow-white beach at Chia or to admire the marvellous woods of Is Cannoneris, where it is not unusual to find “ovuli” and “porcini” mushrooms. One of the events that cannot be missed is the “Fig Festival”, the sweet and succulent fruit of the Chia area, the “Fish Festival” in the month of May and the Feast of "S'Arroseri" in honour of the Madonna del Rosario, the Patron Saint of the village, which is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.

In the area there are several restaurants , shops are concentrated in the hotel square Chia Laguna , as well as the pharmacy .

Sport in the Area: Kitesurfing , Windsurfing , Surfing, Horse Riding, Canoeing , Sailing, Scuba Diving, Golf (Is Molas – Pula).

Su Giudeu Beach (500mt): Su Giudeu is one of the very famous beaches that look out onto the bay of Chia, that also includes the Spiaggie Colonia, Porto Campana and S’Acqua Durci. It is joined to the beach of S’Acqua Durci, with which it shares the marvellous colours of the transparent waters of changing shades and the white of the sand. The name comes form the octopus that swims in the waters around a couple of rock-cliffs - also known as Su Giudeu - reached from the shore by swimming or on foot across a stretch of particularly shallow water.

Cala Cipolla Beach (800mt): Situated just before the promontory of Capo Spartivento, from which the tall tower of the lighthouse can be admired, Cala Cipolla is surrounded by pines and secular junipers. The panorama offered by this coastal line also includes the expanse of beaches, ponds and promontories that develop around the tower of Chia, with the whole remainder of the South Coast (Costa del Sud) that stretches out to the west up to Capo Teulada. The beach has pure white sand and granite rocks of a thousand forms. Cala Cipolla, which borders with the bay of S’Acqua Durci della Baia di Chia, is not particularly large but it boasts remarkable beauty owed to the crystal clarity of the sea and the highlights of the sand. The cove is enclosed by granite bluffs.
